THE PURPLE WORMHOLE IN TIME
BY PARKER KNOPF
7TH GRADE STUDENT
mAY 25, 2014
“Come on clock tick faster.” I thought to myself. I was learning World History in room 14 about the gold rush that happened years ago right beneath my very feet. I knew this was the day I had to tell my best friend Lucas we had to move 200 miles away and live with my grandparents because my dad got laid off from his job. This was going to be the worst day in my life, until I actually moved. To make matters worse, I was in history prison listening to the ugly warden Ms. Grimm, who is really my history teacher. I hate her with a passion. Her voice is robotic, she falls asleep during class, and she reads her Oprah magazines instead of teaching us. The only good thing about this class is that it is 7th period, the last period of the day.
“Ok class you can pack up now.” Ms. Grimm said in her annoyingly, monotone voice.
The class filled with noise and before I knew it the bell rang.
“Lucas, wait up!” I yelled. I ran across the room to meet him at the exit.
However, before I could exit the classroom, Ms. Grimm yelled, “Thomas Lombard what have I told you about running in my classroom,” but I acted like I didn’t hear her, and continued on my way.
Lucas and I were best friends, and always walked home together. We were walking back home on 6th street when we came across a mysterious object that changed our lives.
“Did you get anything out of that class Lombard?” Lucas asked.
“No, Ms. Grimm almost sounded like the adults on that Charlie Brown movie.”
“Ya, I guess you’re right, I mean after all she used to speak Span….”
As we walked, I wondered how I was going to break the news that this week would be the last week I walked home with him. I was moving away from my best friend I'd had since Sally took my lunch money in pre-school and Lucas snatched it out of her chubby hand and gave it back to me. Thoughts of my dreaded exodus from the only town and only real friend I had ever known, was suddenly interrupted by something I saw in the distance.
“Lucas, do you see that thing up there on the mountain?” I said without letting Lucas finish.
“You mean that reflection?”
“Yeah, race you to it!”
We both took off running as fast as we could, but Lucas is more athletic than I am and left me in his dust. He was already half way up the cliff side of the mountain before I even got to the base of it. I started to frantically grab onto ledges that I could find. I’m so glad my parents made me go to that camp last week. Those rock climbing lessons really paid off. When I finally neared the top, Lucas gave me a hand and pulled me up. Right before us on the edge of the cliff was a dark purple princess cut diamond shaped object that lay on the ground with what looked like a ring of burnt terrain surrounding it.
We didn’t talk, but panted from our long journey. Soon enough though I broke the silence by asking, “What on earth do you think this thing is Lucas?”
“I don’t know, do I look like I'm Bill Nye the science guy to you?”
“Well, what should we do, it’s kinda cool looking.”
“If you like it then take it, but I want nothing to do with it.” Lucas replied like it was some kind of illegal object.
I reached down to pick it up, but hesitated for a moment, then grabbed it with my sore hands. It was cold like metal, but soft as sand. It was like nothing I have ever felt before, like it did not belong on planet Earth.
I took the mysterious object and shoved it in my backpack for safe keeping.
Then I heard Lucas ask, “Hey, while we are up here why don’t we check out that abandoned mine.”
Lucas and I have always wanted to enter the mine that we had discovered just a few weeks ago. We walked in silence on our way to the mine, probably because we were so deep in thought about the mysterious object.
"Would you look at that! That's one weird oak tree," said Thomas.
"Yes... it's a tree, so what," Lucas replied.
"Do you need glasses, it looks like it came straight out that movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and it seems to be growing right out of the center of those large rocks"
"Who even saw that movie? Who cares, it's not important. Stop wasting time and let's go into the mine!"
When we finally entered the mine it became cold and dark. I went to get my flash light that I keep in my right pocket when all of a sudden the whole inside of my backpack lit up, and vibrated violently.
“What’s going on?” Lucas yelled.
“I don’t know, I'm not Bill Nye either!” I replied.
I quickly unzipped my backpack to find the once calm object bursting with energy. I threw it to the left side of the cave. Then, as soon as it had started, it stopped.
“Do you hear that?” I asked Lucas.
“What now?” he answered with a sigh, but before he could completely finish speaking the top of the cave started to collapse on both of us.
I started to run out of the mine, but too much earth fell and I ended up piled in rubble, but unhurt. I turned to look at Lucas, and saw that his mouth was dropped open. I turned my head to follow his eyes and wished I hadn’t. Before me was a purple stream of air that twisted around in a tight circle. A wormhole! It came closer to me, almost like a hand trying to grab something. I tried to scream, but all that came out was a squeak, and right as it touched me everything went black.
“Uh, Ohhh” I cried, as I realized I was no longer in the cave but rolling down some hill. I don’t know what happened, all I remember was being trapped in a cave, then ending up here. Wherever here is. When I finally stopped spinning I looked down to see red blood gushing out of my knee, and a black-and-blue elbow. I turned just in time to see Lucas appear out of thin air in the same location as I did. He also started tumbling down the hillside. I went to get my green backpack that had fallen off while I was rolling.
“Aww,” I screamed,” Lucas it’s the mysterious object again, how did it end up here?” I picked it and my backpack up.
Lucas soon got up and limped down the rest of the mountain to meet me. He had also gotten hurt.
When he finally made it down, he asked with a smile, “What do you think happened Lombard?”
I hated it when he called me by my last name. It always meant that he was calling me a know-it-all. “How am I supposed to know, I am clueless.” I answered with a frown.
“Well whatever happened, that mysterious object you have in your hands caused it.” Lucas replied quickly.
“Let’s call it the 'UKE.' Calling it the mysterious object is getting old.” I said with some excitement.
“What does UKE mean?” Lucas replied.
“UKE, stands for Unidentified Key of Entry.”
It was hot in the sun and Lucas and I had found a shady place to figure out what to do. We even explored a little and found nothing, like we were in a new land.
“Bring that coal out!”
“What do mean by coal Lucas?”
“That wasn’t me, I swear.” Lucas replied with a sense of question.
We both started running to where we thought the voice came from, and hid in the tall, thick, and green grass. I scanned the area and noticed about 100 yards away, a mine was being built. The miners were wearing strange wool clothes, I saw some donkeys and horses.
“Ah ha,” I said.
"Where are we?" replied Lucas.
I said, "Look at that UNIMPORTANT tree!"
"No way! It can't be!" exclaimed Lucas
Thomas quickly replied, "Yep, say hello to the Nightmare Before Christmas tree. It's a good thing that I paid attention to my surroundings before we entered that mine because we would be wasting a lot of time trying to figure out where we are."
"That's the same mine we were just in, but in a different time," I said.
"Okay, okay, I have to give you props," muttered Lucas.
“What do you think this means,” Lucas asked.
“The only explanation for this is that we went back in time.” I frantically said.
“Well how do we get back to our time?
“We go through the wormhole again.” I have seen it happen in so many movies. We waited for night fall so we could sneak in to see if my hypothesis worked. When the miners were done digging, and the bosses were done shouting we made our move.
“Thomas the coast is clear.” Lucas whispered. We had made it to the entrance of the mine without being noticed.
“So you really think this will work?” Lucas whispered silently.
“To tell you the truth, I don’t know.” I replied, but the first step I took in the mine the UKE glowed. I took it out of my backpack and threw it with all my might to the right side of the mine.
The same thing happened, except this time I didn’t land on a hill, but on a plain of soft grass. Lucas soon accompanied me a few moments afterward. We sat there in silence trying to recoup.
“Hey! No one runs off with my gold!” said an unfamiliar voice. “BANG, BANG!”
Lucas and I curled up and clenched our ears at the loud noise, which sounded most likely like a gunshot. Then shortly after I heard a voice mutter, “serves him right.”
After Lucas and I heard that, we bolted to get away from whoever they were. I ran so fast, that I didn’t even bother to see if Lucas was with me.
“Uh,” Lucas grunted.
I looked back and saw him lying on the ground hidden in the tall grass.
“Come on Lucas we need to go,” I yelled.
He didn’t budge, so I ran over to him to see what the problem was. He had tripped over a wooden box.
“Come on Lucas get up.” I grabbed him with both of my hands and tried to lift him up, but just nudged him off the box. As I went to try to lift him up again, I was blinded by something in the box. I looked to see what had blinded me, and saw the biggest golden nugget that I have ever seen before. I quickly pulled off my backpack, and shoved the golden nugget into it. By then Lucas got to his feet and started running up the hill. I ran after him and met him on the top.
“Wow, that was a close one, huh,” I said.
“Where are we?” Lucas asked.
“I am not sure, but I have an idea.”
“Well what is it?” Lucas asked eagerly.
“The gold rush.” I answered sadly.
“Why aren’t we back home?” Lucas asked.
“I don’t know, I did everything right, and threw the UKE to the right... That’s why, I should have thrown it to the left, not the right. Oops.”
“Ya that might have helped.” Lucas said with a sense of anger.
It only took Lucas and I an hour or so to find what we thought to be the mine with the wormholes.
“Well when should we go into it?” Lucas asked.
“Let’s go now and get it over with. I just want to get home, and get under my own roof.” I replied.
We ran down hill into the valley that the mine lay right above. It was hard to run with a backpack flopping on your back. Lucas and I took a breather at the bottom and sat on some boulders in the shade.
“Lucas, look water!” I said with tons of excitement. We haven’t had any water all day, except my half empty water bottle from school. We both dove for the small pond and took scoops of water to our faces.
“Ha, I have never enjoyed water so much. It’s so refreshing.” Lucas said.
I took my empty water bottle, and filled it to the rim for later use. After we finished up at the pond we hiked up the hill to the mine's entrance.
“Well this is it, the right mine alright...there's the same TREE!” I said.
“Well let’s hope it gets us home.” Lucas replied.
I took the UKE out of my backpack and held it in both of my hands very tightly. Again when I walked in it shook and lit up.
“Make sure you throw it to the left, I don’t want to go anywhere else, but home.” Lucas said in a hurry.
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. It seemed like everything was happening in slow motion. When I opened my eyes I saw my hand tossing the UKE to the left side of the cave. I hope this works I thought to myself.
“Ow,” I fell on some dirt, and my back hit a hard rock. I was used to this teleporting thing, but always ended up getting hurt.
“Awwwwwww” I looked up and saw Lucas falling right above me. I reacted fast and rolled to the right to avoid him.
“Ugh, I hate going through that part.” Lucas said with a grunt.
I giggled at that, because Lucas never admitted that he disliked something.
“Well Lucas, I think we’re home.” That woke him up right away from his daydream, and he started sprinting down the hillside. “Wait up Lucas!” I started to run after him down the hill, like a cheetah chasing after his prey.
“Yahooooo!” Lucas screamed at the top of his lungs. He was way ahead of me around a big mountain. I knew that he saw our town. When I finally caught up to him, he had just entered the edge of town, and was staring at a sign stapled to a telephone pole.
“What are you looking at.” but before I could finish I saw the shocking news. On the sign was a picture of Lucas and me. It showed us missing, with a $40,000 dollar reward.
“How long have we been gone?” Lucas asked. "My mom is going to hug me, then she is going to kill me!"
“ I think we've been gone for less than 24 hours. Well, we better be getting home then.” We started walking home wondering what would be waiting for us.
“Home!” Lucas started sprinting toward his big two story house. I have never seen him so happy in my life. I started jogging to get to my house too.
“Awe” I sighed with relief, “Home.” I climbed up our big bulky steps and walked across the porch. I reached for the knob, but hesitated wondering what I would tell my family. I got myself together and grabbed the knob. Oh, it felt so good to touch that cold metal door knob. When I opened the door I saw my family crying in the kitchen.
“I’m home.” I said with a excitement. Both my parents looked up with tears streaming down their red faces. We all ran together and hugged, kissed, and cried. It took a long time for us to talk.
“Well where were you Thomas?” My dad asked with weeps in-between every other word.
“I’d tell you, but I don’t think you’d believe me.”
"Just look!" I exclaimed while pointing inside my backpack.
"What the....?" my family yelled.
"Gold! We are rich...we don't have to move!" I screamed.
NIS NUMBERS & NOTABLE QUOTES
In this survey, fifty students at NIS were asked what kind of book they prefer to read, fiction or non-fiction. Then they were asked what subject within fiction or non-fiction they preferred. They were given six choices in the survey, three for fiction and three for non-fiction. They were allowed to select more than one subject. The fifty people surveyed made 61 choices. The results were that 25% preferred non-fiction, while 75% preferred fiction. The three fiction subjects were mystery, action and horror. Action was first place with 45% and mystery was second. Some surveyors were excited. “Action is awesome!” was written by Mason Tejeda, and “Because it’s not boring,” by Daniela Murillo. Some people liked violence, and said, “I like books that have violence in them,” and “For me the book needs to be excitingly full of action,” by Jessica Gutierrez and Parker Knopf. The three nonfiction subjects were science, history and biology. History was the clear winner here, as its percent was double that of second place. One NIS student, Lilly Maiale wrote, “I like reading nonfiction life books, it’s the life I wished I had.” Another student said “I love reading about the past,” by Nicole Thom. In this survey, two students wrote in their own subject, romance, as the subject they prefer. Some students even like reading and wrote in, “I would read all of them if I had the chance,” and “I love scientific hunt, love, mystery, and action,” by Nick Ramos, and Victoria Bodnar.
“Ok class you can pack up now.” Ms. Grimm said in her annoyingly, monotone voice.
