You may remember when geeks were just outcasts, well not anymore. Currently they're proud to show their real self, their inner geek. We even have contests to see who the biggest geek of them all is. I have chosen the geek of the week, and he is Luke Frantz. He was chosen because he is an extreme gamer, which is one of the main characteristics of the geek brotherhood. He may only play on the computer and Xbox 360, but he makes up for it by spending countless hours battling in games between the two systems. Luke is a very special gamer, because he will make you laugh...which just might be his secret weapon to disrupt your video game concentration. His gamer tag on Xbox is, "H0B0 BREATH." Beware, he will rage a lot and try to kill you. He even said that when he joins in a Halo or Call of Duty match, the players scream with joy and anger!
Who do you think is the best superhero? Luke said his favorite super hero of all time is Captain America, because he can throw his shield and get it back. He is super buff too. Most people watch YouTube like Luke and I. I asked Luke what his favorite YouTube channel was. He quickly replied, Achievement Hunter. Achievement Hunter is a gaming company that has over eight million subscribers and plays many types of video games. The co-founder is Jack Pattillo and the CEO is Geoff Ramsey. Let me give you a warning, if you go and watch them, they use very horrid language. They also have a main channel called Rooster Teeth. Luke is an extreme gamer so one day I asked him, “How many hours do you play video games a day?” He replied, “About three hours a day.” In return I asked, “How many hours do you play a week then?” He excitably answered, “About twenty-one hours a week!” When Luke was asked if he liked sci-fi, he surprisingly replied, "I like it a little bit." I found this interesting because most people I know like science fiction, and most geeks are sci-fi fanatics. My Geek of The Week said his favorite sci-fi movie was Transformers III Dark of The Moon. His favorite part of the movie was when Optimus Prime fought Megatron and ended him. He responded that he felt sad because Optimus Prime got his arm chopped off.
The other team shutters when they see his name “Hobo Breath.” They immediately know he is the man to beat. Although all gamers want to play the best out there, it is still scary because you may be killed and loose lives. When the game starts, Hobo Breath walks down the fiery corridor into a burning building. As he walked into the burning building, men come at him from every corner. With nerves of pure steal, Luke reacts by tossing a grenade, which sticks to the screaming enemy’s leg. It explodes and kills several men. Hobo Breath continues through his journey killing all the men that he comes in contact with. The next thing you know, he has twenty kills. Later in the game, "ding" his microwave goes off and his hot pocket is ready. He tells his friends, “I have to eat but I’ll be back!” The other team sighs with relief because the best player is gone. Eventually, Hobo Breath will become a dictator and rule the Halo world with his big, buff cyber-muscles. Gamers better start paying him tribute before it is too late. Hobo Breath will become the king of Sparta, so all you gamers better be prepared to quiver at the sight and sound of him. Geeks, beware! Let this be all the warning you need, to stay clear of the master of gaming.
NIS NUMBERS AND NOTABLE QUOTES
"Fifty NIS students were surveyed and asked whether or not they considered themselves geeks." Forty percent of the students considered themselves geeks while thirty-nine percent of students did not consider themselves geeks. The remaining twenty-one percent of students weren't sure either way. The percentages say that most students feel they are geeks. I found it interesting that such a large percentage of students were unsure. Austin Erwin commented, “Have you met me, like look what I do in my free time.” Hope Hecht said, “MINECRAFT! Brent Kavianian replied quickly, “Haha, NO!” The Geek of the Week exclaimed, "I play video games and eat potato chips when I’m not getting ripped at the gym or playing baseball.”

It was a sunny, warm afternoon and I was waiting for something interesting to happen, then BOOM! A rock hit me on the head, the rock said there should be a geek of the week. I'm just messing with you, a rock didn't hit me on the head or speak to me, that's just foolish. But I was determined to find the geek of the week. I asked a few people and Ronnie Thistlethwaite emerged as the geek of the week.
I was determined to find out why he should be geek of the week. What is a geek? The word Geek is a slang term to describe someone who is a knowledgeable and an obsessive enthusiast. That's a nice way to describe people who like to sit in a room and stare at a computer. I interviewed Ronnie, who is a 7th grade student at Norco Intermediate. Ronnie's geek passion is computer games. His favorite game is World of Warcraft, which is an online internet game. Ronnie has 26 characters and competes with his Dad. They also challenge other World of Warcraft members from different parts of the U.S. The game costs $15 a month and players can team up with other players in battles or they can simply explore the different worlds. When I asked what Ronnie would recommend to students at the school, he said Age Of Empires. Age of Empires is a history based real time strategy game.
Ronnie's other interests are playing baseball and basketball which shows that being a geek doesn't mean you cant be athletic. The main thing I learned in conducting this interview was geeks are not as geeky as I thought they were. I think there is a little bit of geekiness in all of us, and that is not a bad thing.
For more information check out the video below and World of Warcraft history below.

In the past, geeks were commonly frowned upon. They weren't exactly the most popular, but here we fully embrace and encourage you to be the geekiest that you can be. We even hold contests to find out who the geekiest person of the week should be. I like to call it Geek of the Week! You may be the next to win this geektacular contest, but not this time. The winner this week is Joshua Maney! Congratulations to Mr. Maney for displaying his ultimate superior knowledge of all things that are geek!
We, of course, had to begin our geek investigation with questioning his pick of the greatest, most powerful, and tremendously epic superheroes! Joshua Maney quickly replied,"The Hulk is my favorite superhero because he is a giant green monster that has incredible strength, and can throw people all the way across the planet." Another monster that Josh feels worthy to mention in the same sentence was Mew-two. He said,"Mew-two is the best Pokemon because he can use telekinesis and can do awesome things that are totally awesome!" One of the final things he said to me was that he also likes video games. He exclaimed,"I prefer the XBOX 1 over the PS4 because I want to stay faithful to Microsoft." These qualities are respected among us geeks.
The only thing that disappointed me in my interview with Josh is that he doesn't like anime. He claimed, "Anime is too gory and explicit and that it never makes any sense." This was merely a minor blemish on Josh's superior geekiness record. Overall, Joshua Maney is the geekiest person of the week, but maybe next week you could win this prestigious award. It won't be easy to top everyone else in the battle of the geeks. Try your best to win this award and maybe, just maybe, if your constellations are aligned... you will be able to win!
